San Francisco may want to rethink its definition of “the Big One” as it prepares to host Salesforce’s Dreamforce 2015 conference this week.

The conference starts tomorrow and runs through Friday.

Already the world’s largest software conference, this year’s Dreamforce is on track to break its own previous attendance records. An earthshaking 150,000 are registered to be there in-person and another 10 million are expected to join online.

All Aboard the Dreamboat

In fact, this year’s conference will place such demands on area hotels and the Moscone Center exhibition complex that Dreamforce has pressed a Celebrity Cruise ship ― re-christened the Dreamboat ― into service as a floating lodging and party venue.

But Dreamforce assures the Bay Area that the irrepressible mix of established tech giants, start-up hopefuls, not-for-profit movers and shakers, small business owners and celebrities who’ll attend will only disrupt the environment in a metaphorical sense.

That’s because Dreamforce 2015 is billing itself as 100 percent sustainable and green through a combination of waste reduction measures, carbon offsets and investment in a Sacramento River Basin conservation project intended to replace the water used by conference attendees.

This year, the event will take place at the Moscone Center, Marriott Marquis, InterContinental, The Palace Hotel, Hilton Union Square, The Park Central (formerly Westin Market Street), Century Theaters & Bespoke at Westfield, and AMC Metreon Theaters.

Star Power on Stage

With keynotes lined up from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Travis Kalanick of Uber, as well as musical appearances by Foo Fighters, The Killers and Gary Clark Jr., the promotional video describing Dreamforce as a “music festival for geeks” and “cloud computing meets Mardi Gras” actually might be understating the case.

In addition, the Startup Summit, a parallel conference aimed at entrepreneurs, will feature Nasty Gal founder Sophia Amoruso, actor and sustainable living advocate Adrian Grenier, Box CEO Aaron Levie, and Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve Young.

Another side conference, Dreamforce’s Dev Zone, will include hundreds of breakout sessions for developers, and is expecting 25,000 attendees.

Learning Opportunities

Philanthropy Comes to the Cloud

This year’s Dreamforce will also focus on doing good beyond the tech industry, with major initiatives aimed at women, children and returning veterans.

Salesforce’s new Dreamforce Women’s Leadership Summit will feature YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, actress and founder of The Honest Company Jessica Alba, and Academy Award-winning actress Patricia Arquette.

Dreamforce is also launching its VetForce initiative this year as a means of helping veterans to reenter the job market.

Through VetForce, Salesforce will provide resources for resume help, mentorship, career training and introductions to potential employers.

In conjunction with Dreamforce, the Salesforce Foundation will also hold what it hopes will be the largest book drive in history, work with organizations that teach young women to code and direct the proceeds of its benefit concert to UCSF’s Benioff Children’s Hospital.

CMSWire will be attending Dreamforce to bring you the latest news and new product announcements each day.
