Tel Aviv-based Wix, a web development platform, is bring artificial intelligence (AI) into website design and creation.

The company today launches Wix Artificial Design Intelligence (ADI) — arguably a first of its kind solution that claims to reduce the time, design and content creation challenges associated with site development.

ADI provides intelligent design choices based on data gleaned from some 85 million users of the Wix platform, Nitzan Achsaf, head of Wix ADI, told CMSWire.

“It gathers information across the web about your business and it knows where to enter it in the right place on the website, which means that it knows the best content to offer for your website page by page, section by section,” Achsaf said. “This hand holding starts at the beginning and continues until you finish your website. It doesn’t matter what content you choose. The ADI knows how to build beautiful websites.”

Wix: 80M Users Worldwide

Wix provides a cloud-based web development platform that allows users to create HTML5 web and mobile sites through the use of an online drag and drop tool. With both freemium and premium models, users can add functionalities such as social plug-ins, e-commerce, contact forms, e-mail marketing and community forums to their websites using a variety of Wix-developed and third-party applications.

Wix claims more than 80 million registered users worldwide.

Founded in 2006, it raised $58.5 million in four rounds before launching an initial public offering in 2013. The IPO raised about $127 million, a good deal of which was pumped back into the company on research and development (R&D) and marketing.

All this goes to show that freeium models can work, and with the new ADI muscle, it could work a lot more effectively for enterprises looking for an easy-to-develop web experience.

'Effective Web Experience'

Achsaf called Wix ADI the first website builder in history that uses AI. "Think of a machine that asks you a bunch of questions that are then used to help automatically build your homepage, for example, and then guides you through every step of what you need to do from that. That’s what ADI does," he said.

Learning Opportunities

It combines artificial intelligence and human design, resulting in algorithms that ensure every website design will be provide an effective web experience based on simple criteria established by the user.

Wix ADI designs tailored websites by learning about the user through a few simple questions and curating content to create a unique design, he continued, explaining that it selects the right combinations for each user from an analysis of billions of combinations and possibilities.

“It starts by asking you a few questions, and then based on those questions, like location, what design you like and what you want to do, it knows what algorithms and content to build for you. In effect, it calculates billions and billions of possibilities and uses that to build a site for you. If you are not happy it keeps working on the feedback you give it until such a point as you like it,” Achsaf added.

Wix ADI can develop the website completely for the user, or show them how to do it themselves, he said. Once the website is completed, users have the option of customizing themes, editing text or adding images, sections and pages.

Achsaf called Wix ADI a natural evolution of the Wix portfolio.

“Every few years Wix tries to re-invent itself. It did it with HTML 5, and mobile before that, and now we are doing it again. When we think of the future of the company this is the product that we will continue to invest in moving forward,” he said.
