It’s your nightmare scenario: You’re about to close a deal when suddenly your customer’s data disappears from Salesforce. Do you panic and watch as a competitor waltzes away with your business?

Fort Lee, N.J.-based OwnBackup thinks it has a better option:

The global cloud-to-cloud backup and restore vendor — which also has offices in Herzliya Pituach, Israel — has just launched a new cloud-based backup and recovery platform specifically designed for Salesforce.

Data Retrieval and Enterprise Security

The result is that users can now choose where and what data to back up, as well as access tools capable of retrieving data that looks like it might have slipped through the cracks of enterprise security.

The new enterprise application is built on Force.com and is available through Microsoft Azure.

Protecting Business-Critical Data

OwnBackup’s new Salesforce recovery tool was built in response to the massive increase in cloud storage options and use of applications in the cloud, Sam Gutmann, CEO of OwnBackup, told CMSWire.

It also addresses the fact that enterprises are increasingly storing their business-critical data across a mixture of on-premises and cloud-based applications. “It is critical that businesses maintain ownership of their data [to] ensure that it is protected and available,” Gutmann said.

“Unfortunately, many [companies] still believe that just because [their] data is in the cloud, it is by definition protected and safe. That is a dangerous myth. In fact, cloud services like Salesforce explicitly recommend that customers back up and protect their own data,” he continued.

Marketplace Momentum for OwnBackup

This, Gutmann noted, was the original impetus for creating OwnBackup. Today, according to Crunchbase, the company “provides secure, automated, daily backups of SaaS and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) data, as well as sophisticated data compare and restore tools for disaster recovery.”

Learning Opportunities

Founded in 2012, OwnBackup closed a $3.5-million Series A funding round earlier this year. It is the top-ranked independent backup and restore software vendor on the Salesforce.com AppExchange and was also named a 2015 Gartner “Cool Vendor” in the area of Business Continuity and IT Disaster Recovery.

Recovery and Restoration

“Backup is only one piece of the puzzle,” Gutmann cautioned. “In reality, what really matters is recovery. OwnBackup’s tools allow businesses to back up all of their data and metadata.”

“In the event of a data loss, OwnBackup’s application shows exactly what data was lost down to the very granular level of ‘information about that information,’ then restores the data, including all of its supporting properties such as parent-child relationships and metadata,” Gutmann continued.

Responding to Cloud Vulnerabilities

Gutmann also pointed out that OwnBackup was born within the Salesforce ecosystem. With technology and tools specifically designed for large Salesforce implementations — including numerous integrations and customizations — OwnBackup for Salesforce is also positioned to respond to the growing vulnerability of data stored in the cloud or in SaaS applications.

Expanding Its Global (and Cloud) Presence

With February’s funding round now in play, OwnBackup will be expanding its global presence, as well as offering new functionality, between now and the end of the year.

“With SaaS and PaaS starting to capture more and more of an enterprise’s IT spend, the data stored in these modern systems is now much more vulnerable than in the past. Own Backup is [committed to] bringing enterprise-level protection to those cloud-based applications,” Gutmann promised.
