Only two weeks after it announced they were on the way, Microsoft has released the preview version of Universal Office apps for Windows 10. This first batch includes Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

These apps are available for free download for PCs, tablets and phones that are running Windows 10 Technical Preview, and will be followed in the coming weeks by the other Office apps.

Windows 10 Preview

These apps have been developed specifically for touch and mobile use in keeping with Microsoft's Cloud First, Mobile First strategy. The “universal” refers to the fact that the apps will work on both Windows Phones and Windows tablets.

Office for Word

If you’re already using the Windows 10 Technical Preview you can search for Word, Excel and PowerPoint in the new Windows Store Beta. If you can wait a bit longer, the new apps will be pre-installed on devices that are bought with Windows 10.

The release of the new apps begins the first stage of what will be two Office suites. Microsoft is designing apps for the mobile world, as well as working on Office 2016, the next desktop version of Office. It's expected to be released later this year.

The release of these apps follows hot on the heels of release of a version of Office for Android and iOS users, irritating many Windows Phone users who felt they had been cold-shouldered.
