New Webflow data shows AI misrepresents brands about a third of the time they're mentioned, with almost no message pull-through.

The Gist

  • How visible are brands in AI search right now? The median company appears in just 16% of relevant AI-generated answers and receives a citation link only 6% of the time, according to Webflow's analysis of 2,000 U.S. company sites.
  • What's driving poor AI visibility? Broken internal links (62%), missing SEO metadata (60%) and stale content — 54% of brands haven't refreshed even a tenth of their content in six months.
  • Which AEO lever matters most for getting mentioned? Authority signals — author bylines, sourced data, credentials and third-party recognition — correlate more strongly with mention rates than content, technical readiness or measurement.
  • Can smaller brands compete with larger ones on AEO? Yes — while bigger brands lead through authority built on scale, smaller companies can reach the same maturity tier by maxing out content quality and technical fundamentals alone.

Oh no, AEO. What's the problem?

The problem is your brand is not showing up in AI Land. And when it does, it's the wrong information every third time.

Sounds like a great landscape to invest some brand marketing and content, eh?

Webflow, an agentic web marketing platform which offers Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) capabilities, did the research here. It analyzed more than 2,000 U.S. company websites, spread across industries and company sizes using publicly available data, to see how well brands are doing with visibility across answer engines, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude.

How are brands doing with AI search and brand visibility inside the bots?

  • The median company appears in just 16% of AI-generated answers relevant to its brand.
  • The median company receives a citation link only 6% of the time, limiting referral traffic and therefore revenue, from AI platforms.
  • When companies are mentioned, AI gets the facts wrong roughly one-third of the time, with almost no message pullthrough for brands.
  • The average company scored just two out of five in Webflow’s AEO Maturity Model.

Where do brands go wrong with AI search and AI brand visibility? They have broken internal links (62%), miss basic SEO metadata (60%) and haven't refreshed even a 10th of their content in the last six months (54%).

Why AI Search Is Still Cutting Organic Traffic, Even With AEO Investment

These numbers come from a provider who offers solutions to these kind of visibility problems. But the numbers don't lie. And it's pretty jarring when the industry's calling for investments into answer engine optimization to poke the bots, get on their radar and have your brand get into the bot conversation.

Just like SEO. But with a different host: LLMs, not Google.

And there are success stories. There is some truth to the "AI refers better" chant, and Adobe's Prime Day analysis proved that.

So what do we do? Conversion numbers look compelling in AI search. But brands still struggle for visibility. And you've got Google saying SEO still matters and should work in tandem with AEO efforts.

AEO. SEO. GEO. It's enough to make your head spin a bit.

“We view Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) as an evolution of SEO, and it’s clear that this discipline is much more cross-functional than SEO is,” Guy Yalif, chief evangelist at Webflow who led the research project and developed the company's AEO Maturity Model, said in a July 16 press release. “AEO spans brand marketing, engineering, content, communications, product, analytics and more. Organizations that rethink how they build and manage their digital presence to drive brand awareness and traffic from answer engines will get oversized benefits in these early days of this new medium.”

But Is AEO Really Beating Other Content Discovery Channels?

Here are some other sobering numbers that indicates AEO is not winning against other content approaches:

Across Google Search, Discover, and Google News, Search Engine Land found:

  • Breaking news traffic grew 103% from November 2024 through early 2026 in the company’s dataset.
  • Losses were concentrated in informational and evergreen content: Organic search traffic averaged 1.7 billion clicks per quarter from Q1 2023 through Q1 2024.
  • After AI Overviews launched, traffic fell 16% immediately and never recovered.
  • As Google expanded AI Overviews in May 2025, declines accelerated. By Q4 2025, search traffic was down 42% from the pre-AI Overviews baseline.

What Matters Here: What Does the Median Company's 16% AI Answer Visibility Rate Reveal?

It means the typical brand is largely absent from AI-generated answers, and even when mentioned, gets a citation link only 6% of the time.

Webflow's AEO Maturity Model breaks visibility down into four buckets: content, technical readiness, authority and measurement. The finding that should worry CMOs: these categories barely move together. Webflow found less than 9% shared variance between them, meaning a company that's great at one is often mediocre at the rest. There's no single fix.

The payoff for getting more of them right is real. Companies that climbed from Level 1 to Level 3 AEO maturity saw mention rates jump 2.3 times and citation rates jump 3.7 times.

AEO Maturity Model Scores By Category

Webflow scored each of the 2,000 company sites from 1 to 5 across four categories. Here's how the median brand performed.

CategoryMedian Score (out of 5)What It Measures
Overall2Composite AEO readiness across all four categories
Content1Whether content answers prospect questions and stays fresh
Technical1Site health issues like broken links and missing metadata
Authority2Third-party mentions, bylines and credentialed content
Measurement3Whether teams track AI-referred traffic and mention rates

What Matters Here: Why Do AEO's Four Maturity Levers Move Independently of Each Other?

Content, technical health, authority and measurement share less than 9% variance, so strength in one area rarely predicts strength in another — there's no single fix.

Authority Signals Correlate More Strongly With Mentions Than Anything Else

Of the four categories, authority had the single strongest correlation with how often a brand gets mentioned by answer engines, according to Webflow's analysis. Yet 73% of companies are mentioned in fewer than a quarter of the places LLMs already cite for their category, and 55% lack basic on-site authority signals — author bylines, sourced data, credentials — on more than 85% of their relevant pages.

The second-strongest correlate: outside recognition as an industry or thought leader. That puts brand and PR functions, not just SEO teams, squarely inside the AEO conversation.

What Matters Here: How Strongly Does Authority Correlate With AI Mention Rates?

Authority had the strongest correlation with mention rates of any category Webflow measured, yet 55% of companies lack basic bylines, sourced data or credentials on most of their pages.

Bigger Brands Still Have The Edge, but the Gap Is Closable

Scale still matters. Larger brands post a mention rate more than double that of smaller ones (23% vs. 11%), a 60% higher citation rate (8% vs. 5%) and 80% greater share of voice (20% vs. 11%). They're also better understood by the bots, with higher accuracy and message pull-through scores.

Learning OpportunitiesView All

But Webflow's data points to a workaround. Among brands that reached Level 3 AEO maturity, big companies got there mostly through authority. Smaller companies got there instead by maxing out content and technical fundamentals, the two levers fully within their control. Webflow's read: a small brand with clean technical execution and sharp, fresh content can perform on par with a much larger name.

What Matters Here: Can Smaller Brands Close the AEO Gap With Larger Competitors?

Yes — smaller brands that reached higher AEO maturity got there through content freshness and technical fundamentals alone, without the authority advantage that comes from scale.

Tech-Forward Sectors Are Pulling Away From Everyone Else

Industry matters almost as much as company size. B2B SaaS and software companies were mentioned 40%+ more often than industrial and manufacturing companies (20% vs. 14%) and cited more than twice as often (13% vs. 6%).

Push further toward AI-native companies and the gap widens again. Measured against the full 2,000-site sample, Forbes AI 50 companies were mentioned almost twice as often as the typical company (31% vs. 16%) and cited 33% more often. Webflow attributes this to content that's roughly three times fresher and thought-leadership recognition that's 60% higher than the broader sample.

Who's Winning AEO Right Now?

Webflow ranked standout performers within several notable groups of brands.

GroupLeader(s)Why
MANGOS (Meta, Anthropic, Nvidia, Google, OpenAI, SpaceX)Google (deepmind.google), then NvidiaGoogle posted top marks on authority (5/5); Nvidia's 86% mention rate was driven by strong authority (4/5)
Forbes AI 50krea.ai, then Abridge, BaseTen, Coherekrea.ai was the lone group member to hit 4/5 overall, with excellent content and top-tier authority
Ad Age Top 50 Ad SpendersAllstate, then CapitalOne, Pfizer, ProgressiveAllstate led on uniquely strong authority (5/5); Progressive had the group's top visibility at 44%
2026 Cannes Grand Prix WinnersColumbia, Heineken, Suncorp Insurance, AdidasNo brand in this group scored in the top maturity tier, despite award-winning creative

What Matters Here: Is AEO Just SEO With Extra Steps?

Not quite. SEO optimized for a single audience — search crawlers and human readers who click through. AEO has to satisfy that same audience while also convincing an LLM to synthesize your brand accurately and cite it, which pulls in engineering, brand, PR and analytics teams that traditional SEO rarely touched.
